1984

1984 This maybe nonsatisfactory in answering the many themes and symbols that are rampant in the book but may provide an idea of what to write in an essay. (I'm a sharing person.) George Orwell's novel, "1984" was an interesting book. It reminded me of the book, Fahrenheit 451, which also tells of a place where people conform to all rules of the existing society although it proves to be harmful in the end. In 1984, Orwell told of much more procedures to keep the citizens from rebelling such as telescreens and the use of exhaustion- physical and mental while Fahrenheit 451 uses desensitization through television and the clown. (Unsure if it was the clown or not on the television that was affecting Milly) Throughout the novel, George Orwell illustrates the harsh world that could exist in the future time of 1984. The place known as Airstrip One, once known as England, was decaying.PartyThe towns were dilapidated and many of the buildings were crumbling. He predicted that government would hav e a hold on people and that privacy would be nonexistent. In 2002 of America, it seems that his prediction is close to being true. The internet, a growing economy, has many problems with privacy. With threats of more terrorist actions and threats against the U.S., the government has tried a new initiative to inspect every single email that contains words that could mean a decisive threat against the U.S. (for example- "bomb", "Anthrax", etc.") Like the telescreens of 1984, people are watched from "behind the scenes" to make sure that nothing wrong is happening. Although the idea of the U.S. Government initiative may be a good idea at first, it could present a step that will leads to an idea equal to that of telescreens.Winston Smith was a rebellious...

Beware of Whom

Beware of Whom Beware of Whom Beware of Whom By Maeve Maddox I just read a mystery by Sue Grafton in which her character Kinsey Millhone mentally corrects a maid who responds to her phone call by asking Who may I say is calling? The Millhone character thinks Whom, sweetheart, Whom shall I say is calling This passage illustrates the fact that even an excellent writer can have trouble with when to use who and when to use whom. In this case, the maid was right and the detective was wrong. If you want to know why, read on. Like most pronouns, who has two forms: a subject form, who, and an object form, whom. To understand the use of pronoun pairs such as who/whom, he/him, she/her, I/me, they/them, and we/us when used with a verb, one must recognize whether the word is being used as the subject of the verb or as its object. Every verb has a subject. The subject is the doer of an action: I sing. We shop in town. Who knows the secret? Some verbs have objects. The object receives the action: The ball hit me. Dont forget us. Whom do you like best? Most of the time we have little trouble recognizing subject and verb because the subject usually comes before the verb and the object comes after it. The difficulty with who/whom arises from the fact that in a question, word order is reversed. We say Where are you going? and not You are going where?, Whom do you like best? and not You do like whom best? Things get really sticky when a sentence contains more than one clause (i.e., more than one set of subject and verb). The maids response is made up of two clauses. That is, it has two verbs: shall say and is calling. The subject of shall say is I. The subject of is calling is who. The clauses can be constructed in various ways: Who is calling, shall I say? Shall I say who is calling? Who shall I say is calling? The irony of Graftons criticism of the maids use of who is that elsewhere in the novel, Millhone doesnt always use whom when it would be appropriate. Conclusion The use of whom as the object form of who is on its way out of the language. More and more educated speakers and writers use who as both subject and object. There doesnt seem to be any reason not to. Who do you want? has become acceptable. Indeed, to the American ear, Whom do you want? sounds excessively proper. Personally, I like to observe the difference between who and whom in my writing, but I rarely do in speaking. Whatever you do, dont use whom as a subject! Ive seen it done, further proof that this particular point of grammar has lost its significance. If you arent sure whether to use who or whom, go with who. Critical Response Paper Research Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 3

Critical Response - Research Paper Example This fresh replica of 'mothering' might be assumed by everyone, not only by women; hence, Todo Sobre Mi Madre/All About My Mother demonstrates an 'ethics of care', to remind people that compassionate concern is generally a human need, advocating for a universal human response (Garlinger 100). This paper will give a three page response to the film with regard to some of the cinematic aspects discussed in class for instance the use of sound, color, performance and genre, but mainly discuss the cultural differences that may be found in an engagement with the content of the film. The film talks about complex issues that are affecting our society such as AIDS, transvestitism, homosexuality, existentialism and faith (Garlinger 100). Pedro Almodovar's work has been despised as misogynous, as well as celebrated as a feminist film. In essence, this schizophrenia might be because of critics' tendency to center selectively on specific works. Almodovar's movie also seems to connect directly with current debates in feminist and gender theory, sometimes in unsure fashion (Martin-Marquez 498). ... y, the legal representative, Maria Cardenal, takes on the case of a disturbed young man, Antonio Banderas, who acts as Angel, who has turned himself in to the police for serial murder and rape. As one of his likely rape victims watched the news, a female anchor reported that Angel is in police custody, and that Maria Cardenal, a woman, had taken on his case. One, as expected during that time, would wonder why a woman has chosen to defend a man who made their lives hard for them. As expected, numerous prominent feminists were annoyed that their fellow woman opted to defend such a monster (Martin-Marquez 502). Miss Cardenal provoked people by stating that, according to the law, every citizen (Spanish) has the right to Ð ° lawyer, reveling in a truthfully frightening sarcasm. However, Maria can be perceived as the most feminist person in Almodovar's oeuvre. Maddison (267) proposes that, as a serial murderer herself, who opted for male victims entirely, Maria inflicts on men what she co nsiders to be the greater law of a very radical type of feminist justice with regard to women's history of oppression. The tone of the film has the heart-on-the-sleeve emotions of soap operas; however, it is entirely truthful and, by no means, camp (See 60). Contained in this vital judgment of Almodovar’s turn emotion is the equation of insincerity with camp. If the film captures the attention of someone, it is apparently because they were overwhelmed with the happenings of the film. The vital consensus appears to be that the producer has matured profoundly as a filmmaker. This is because it seems as if he was surpassed in early days of camp frivolity, but matured enough to grant emotional gravities in his film (Garlinger 109). This movie shows that the producer went through some form of

How was and is the cold war reflected culturally Essay

How was and is the cold war reflected culturally - Essay Example The commonalities (Cold War order) began from the re-formation of the century long olden times of imperialism and nationalism. The Cold War enmity provided the edge of orientation in which a narrative rapport between imperialism and nationalism wanted to lodge developments such as decolonization and the universal rights uprising; in turn, this adjustment generated developmentalism, multiculturalism, militarism, and new ideologies and modes of individuality configuration, thus producing a novel gathering. The evolving pattern changed and was exaggerated by other chronological factors together with race, femininity, division, and creed among others.1 Era fashioned by structures rising from axis of supremacy that lean to control historical existence. Like other hegemonic configurations, such organizations have a tendency to guide and confine the thoughts of the communal, the biased and selfhood, but these organizations also have violently jagged things and there are countless zones of existence that are relatively unhurt by them. Thus in some places, such as the Japanese territory, exacting aspects, such as developmental imperialism, began prior to the Cold War. One might also argue that in East Asia, the Cold War arrangements began to untie a decade before 1989. The cold war dominated influence on several aspects of people in United States society for almost second half of the twentieth century. It rose as a result of adversary values linking America, representing democracy and capitalism, and Soviet Union, advocating socialism and dictatorship. As the superpowers after the World War II, disputation among the Soviets and Americans rose to be a universal conflict. 2 Cold war was different from several other wars as it was mostly based on propaganda war and much of military activities. Vietnam wars and the Korean wars are crucial instances of military intrusion by the United

Importance of Swot Analysis Essay Example for Free

Importance of Swot Analysis Essay Why is the process of conducting an internal and external analysis on a regular basis important for any size company? The process of an internal and external analysis on a regular basis is important for any size company because it allows the company to know where it stands at the moment and determines the development and forecasts of those factors that will influence the organizational success. This is also known as environmental scanning where the external and the internal environments are scanned for information like ongoing trends patterns, occasions and changes going around and the effect it has to both these environments. External analysis: These analyses are performed outside the firm and depend on the following factors: a, MACRO: technological, demographic/economic, political/legal and social/cultural, national and global environment b. MICRO: competitors, suppliers, customers, publics, channels etc. Internal Analysis: This analysis is performed within the firm that includes the employees, management and the shareholders, resources, organisational structure etc. SWOT Analysis  The most common way of analyzing this external and internal environment is by performing the SWOT analysis. SWOT is an acronym used that describes Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats that are strategic elements for a firm. A SWOT analysis should not only result in the identification of a corporation’s core competencies, but also in the identification of opportunities that the firm is not currently able to take advantage of due to a lack of appropriate resources. (Wheelen, Hunger pg 107) The External analysis comprises of the Opportunities and Threats that the company needs to identify or focus on for its profitability and development of defensive actions. * Opportunities: This analyzes the area where the firm can identify its opportunities so as to have a competitive advantage over its competitors. Once identified, the firm has to work on them to make it one of its strengths. Its main aim is to find an area where they need to develop to be profitable. * Threats: These are the threats that the firm faces from outside the firm and can be from any of the external sources. The firm has to be prepared to tackle these threats by developing strategic decisions when required so that it does not affect their profitability or sales. The Internal analysis focuses on the internal environment of the organisation and analyzes the Strengths and Weaknesses of the company. * Strengths: These are the core competencies of the firm that provides them the advantage of achieving their goals. These should be aligned in meeting the customer requirements because at the end of the day, it is the customer whom they serve. Therefore, it should be customer focussed and market oriented. * Weaknesses: These refer to the firm’s limitations in fulfilling their strategic decisions or failure to implement them. It has to be analyzed from the customer’s point of view so as to get a clear idea. These steps need to analyze the firm’s resources and the capabilities to meet their goals and identify events and trends that might impact the strategic plans and decisions of the company.
